Dynamic Load Monitoring (UK) Ltd. (DLM) of Southampton, UK has added a chatbot to its website — called DynaBot.
DLM is a supplier of load cells, load monitoring technology, and cable working equipment to the lifting, rigging, wind energy, and wider renewables sector. DynaBot reinforces a world-class customer support system for existing and potential clients, in addition to end users.
The chatbot, created in-house, is trained on all DLM products and services, covering applications in offshore cable laying, oil and gas, marine, lifting and other core markets. Previously, customers would have needed to email or call the team to obtain much of the information available via DynaBot. By introducing a chatbot as an option, the company can save audiences time and allow users to access materials with minimal disruption.
Martin Halford, chairperson at DLM, said: “As a company that places a strong emphasis on service, we are always looking for practical ways to continuously improve how we support our customers. The chatbot enables us to provide quick, direct answers to queries, helping customers to find what they need without any delays. It doesn’t replace the interaction we value, but it instead adds another layer of client support. Many of our customers use the website on a frequent basis, so the chatbot enables us to assist them directly at the place they are looking for information, where it best suits them.”
The launch of DynaBot represents completion of an extensive development programme that ensures the system delivers straightforward answers and helps users get to the right solution faster. Importantly, the information available is more in-depth than what can be found on search engines or via artificial intelligence (AI)-based platforms, such as ChatGPT. All responses are centred on real-world knowledge and have been verified by expert engineers.
Getting DynaBot to this point was a meticulous process that first involved selecting the correct platform and agent to train that was best equipped to answer engineering-type questions. The training process itself involved uploading extensive information, providing scenario-based questions and answers, followed by testing with likely questions. The system was trialled against brochures, datasheets, staff knowledge, and a history of queries and common questions, before a refining process ensured all detail provided is legally sound, safe, and fully accurate.
Halford added: “The key purpose at this stage is around product selection for clients’ operations and helping the user navigate the website. It is about how we can leverage technology to maximise efficiency and really optimise the service we can offer, making things easier for the client and offering increased capability. Direct communication remains central to how we support our customers, but many people now turn to the web expecting quick, immediate answers. A chatbot can deliver clear, relevant responses to specific questions, enabling users to reach the right point more efficiently before engaging further where needed.”
If DynaBot is unable to answer a question, it will ask the user for their information so that a member of DLM’s team can connect with them as soon as possible, rather than expecting the user to make contact again. If the customer isn’t willing to give their information, then the chatbot will provide the user with contact details. DynaBot will be continually updated, with advanced versions likely to be able to support customers with more in-depth technical queries.
