DLM’s Long Line Cutter: Protecting Subsea Cables

October 3, 2024

Challenge:

Cable-laying vessels operating worldwide face the risk of disruption from longline fishing wires, which can be extremely difficult to spot, particularly during daylight operations. These wires can cause extensive, often irreparable damage to cables, delay project timelines, and even entangle the vessels themselves.

Overview and Solution:

Although PLGR operators do everything in their power to avoid cutting fishing lines, they are sometimes left with no choice when they cannot make contact with the fishing vessels. Cutting the long fishing lines may be the only cost-effective solution. Given the risk of significant costs that can arise from damage and project delays, making the calculated decision to cut the fishing wires can prevent larger issues from developing.

To address this challenge, we have added the Long Line Cutter to our inventory. Manufactured from high-strength structural steel and equipped with heat-treated cutting discs, the Long Line Cutter’s sharp blades can cut fishing lines with minimal disruption.

The Long Line Cutter’s functionality goes beyond protecting pre-lay grapnel run applications. On some occasions, fishing wires are discovered during cable recovery operations. To salvage the cables, the wires should be carefully cut with sharp blades to prevent further damage. This is where the cutter’s blade sharpness is crucial, as hacking at the wires can cause extensive damage to the cables being recovered, making it imperative to cut once and cleanly.

Result: The Long Line Cutter allows end-users to:

  • Significantly reduce the risk of cable damage caused by fishing lines
  • Minimise financial loss from project delays or repairs
  • Ensure efficient and uninterrupted operations from start to finish
  • Salvage cables that have become entangled in fishing lines
  • Limit and prevent damage to vessels from fishing lines

The Long Line Cutter has become an essential part of any cable-laying project toolkit, and we now have limited stock available at DLM HQ.
